What Is a Hydraulic Press Used For in Woodworking?

A hydraulic press applies even pressure across a whole panel while the glue sets. That’s what gives a flat, fully bonded surface when you veneer a board, laminate a panel or make hollow-core and flush doors. Clamping by hand can’t spread the pressure evenly over a full sheet. Pressed panels usually go on to an edgebander to finish the edges.

Heated and Cold Presses

Heated presses have heated platens that cure the glue in minutes rather than hours, so you can press more panels in a day. They’re the standard choice for veneering and laminating in production.

Cold presses press at room temperature and rely on the glue’s normal setting time. They’re simpler and cost less, and suit lower volumes or glues that don’t need heat.

Presses We Supply

We supply SCM Sergiani GS heated presses, 120-tonne machines with six cylinders and a choice of platen sizes. The control panel calculates the hydraulic pressure, manages the heating and stores your working settings. They’re built for multi-layer panels, veneered panels and hollow-core doors.

SCM also makes the Sergiani GS-F cold press, for workshops that don’t need heat. We also list used presses when we have them in.

Choosing a Press

Match the platen size to your largest panel or door, with some margin. Whether you need a heated press depends on your volume and the glue you use. Heated presses also need a three-phase supply and room around them for loading.
